“There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up. “This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.” When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” “Here I am!” Moses replied.” Exodus 3:2-4
What was your burning bush? The burning bush signified the thing that caught Moses’ attention. It caused him to stop the direction he was going in and turn around to go towards the voice of God. It was something that was so out of the ordinary for him that he couldn’t walk by. He couldn’t un-see it. He couldn’t ignore it.
I think if we’re honest, we’ve all had our burning bush moment. It might not have been as dramatic as a bush that was consumed by fire but not burning up, but we’ve all had something happen that caused us to have to make a decision. For some, it was losing someone. For others it was losing a relationship. For some it may have been an accident. For others, it may have happened in church where we experienced the presence of God and couldn’t ignore it or downplay it.
The point of the burning bush was to draw Moses close. God consumed a bush to get his attention and when Moses decided to go closer, God spoke to him and he responded. Many of us received our burning bush moment but we ignored it. We knew God was calling us, we knew He was trying to get our attention to speak but we ignored Him. We decided to keep going in the direction we were going. We figured we were good because we had been raised in church and knew everything about church.
Some of you reading this struggle with self-control and it shows in many different areas. Whether it be with time management, eating, with sex, with smoking, with drinking, the list can go on. And God has been burning bushes in front of you trying to get your attention to draw your closer but you won’t make a decision to turn from the direction you’re going and go towards Him. For some, God has been calling you to another level of intimacy. I know you are saved and you are in love with Jesus in a corner somewhere, but some of you God has been calling you out of that corner. Some of you God has been calling you to a deeper relationship, but it requires you to stop and go towards Him.
When Moses went to get a closer look, the Bible says that God called out to him and Moses replied. It was here that Moses received direction for his life. It was here that Moses discovered who he was and why he was on this earth. It was here that he received identity. This was the man who had ran from the only home he knew. This was the man who didn’t know who he really was. Yet because he went closer to God, he received answers to questions he had been asking for years.
I wonder what God is trying to reveal to you. I wonder what your burning bush is. How is He trying to get your attention? Today, I encourage you not to see your burning bush and turn the other way. I encourage you to go towards the thing God is using to get your attention. Your answers are there.
